JPex Inferno

Posted in Ai Takahashi, Hello!Project, Morning Musume, Risa Niigaki on June 10, 2009 by Pex

Okay, so…I mentioned last time around that I married Risa in Sims 3, and that my brother was going to propose to Ai-chan.  He did so, and now we are all living happily together in a single house.  Well, I say happily…

Ai-chan tried to kill me last night.  Not intentionally, of course, but still…

Ai-chan, for some reason, decided to grill some food.  Now, we were using the “static motives” cheat to avoid the boring bits (eating, sleeping, etc.), but nevertheless, the first thing that pops into Takitty’s head after getting married is…grill hot dogs.  I’m not sure if there’s some sort of symbolic jiggery-pokery going on there or not, but it’s certainly possible.  Anyway, Ai-chan, being a relatively new character, has not had any training in the cooking skill.  And she sets the grille on fire.  And me as well.

It’s funny, really.  Ai-chan fainted immediately, frighteningly close to the flames.  I was quite worried that she would catch fire.  So I stood next to her panicking and screaming.  Reaction Queen Risa ran around the big wall that encircles our house and proceeded to cringe in terror at more or less the exact spot on the other side of the wall that the flames were coming from.  My brother follows her out there and proceeds to attempt extinguishing the flames from the other side of the wall.  Hey, maybe it can actually work in the Sim world, but I’m pretty sure it can’t in real life, so I was more than a little disturbed by this.

Thinking that perhaps it won’t work after all, I call the firefighters on my cell phone.  The second I hang up, my pants catch fire.  As they are doing so, Ai-chan finally wakes up and rises unsteadily to her feet.  The first thing she sees is my butt on fire, so…she faints again.  In the same frelling spot as before.

I’m worried, but I can’t stop laughing.  Still, I do manage to realize I am right next to our swimming pool, so I dive in.  As I do so, the firefighter runs in, and puts out the fire.  Because the AI in this game is a little screwy, the firefighter then waits until I start climbing out of the pool before he strips down to his undies and dives in after me.  At this point, my brother can’t breathe from laughing and I’m literally doing the Picard facepalm maneuver and giggling to myself like the Frank Gorshin Riddler.  To be honest, I’m still laughing about it every time I think about it, mainly because I was the only one who got hurt.  As close as she was to the flames, I’m just glad that it was me instead of Ai-chan who got burned.  Even so…

The goal for the next play session?  My brother is soooooo teaching his little woman how to cook.  Before she kills us all…

Silicon World

Well, Sims 3 has been released, and my brother and I have, as usual, made virtual versions of ourselves to mess around with.  He went the sports superstar route, while I became a famous author.  For me, at least, it’s pretty close to real life.  Except for the being famous bit.  I’ve only had one thing published so far, so I’ve got quite a ways to go in that department.

What does this have to do with J-Pop, you ask?  Plenty.  First of all, you can import music into the game by putting it in a particular sub-folder of the game’s files.  Just like the first two games.

More importantly, like the first two games, you can create custom Sims.  Some wonderful, wonderful person has made Sims of Morning Musume.  All of the current lineup is available, and apparently IchbnB1 intends to continue making H!P Sims, because since yesterday, he’s also made Miki Fujimoto.  Personally, I hope he makes all of H!P, but I’d settle for the remaining members (past and present) of Morning Musume.

The likenesses are pretty good really, with Sayumi’s being the most faithful to her real-life counterpart, but as I said, there’s not really a bad one to be found among them.  What really impressed me, however, were some of the outfits.  Reina, in particular, has a selection of outfits from her Very Reina photobook (the red dress, and the purple and gold bikini) which look stunning and virtually identical to the ones Reina actually wore.

So, yeah, awesome stuff.  Oh, and I totally married Risa Niigaki last night (and my brother plans on proposing to Ai-chan tonight). *squee!*

Oh, I did manage to find one more MM Simmaker on the Sims 3 website.  So far, they’ve made Mari and Yossy (including a Mr. Moonlight formalwear option!), with hopefully more to come.

Anyone who is thinking of getting Sims 3, now you have another reason to do so – collecting Morning Musume Sims!

2009 H!P Top Ten

Posted in Ai Takahashi, Blog Business, Eri Kamei, Hello!Project, Koharu Kusumi, Morning Musume, Risa Niigaki, Yuko Nakazawa on April 15, 2009 by Pex

Top Ten Lists are tricky things.  I love them, because they’re fun to make, and fun to read, but man, sometimes it is tough to choose among so many good possibilities.  Such was most definitely the case when I took part in Paul Thomas’s Hello!Blog Top Ten survey.  A lot of things weighed on my mind.  I would begin the list, then stop, then begin again.  The funniest thing is that I would start with a particular Top Ten “Theme” in mind, and try to select my top ten according to that theme, but by the time I got to five or six, I realized I was picking with different criteria than how I had started and thus, I was forced to begin again.  Eventually, I just went for it, and although many worthy candidates were not included, I am pretty happy with my list as it now stands.  The theme I eventually went with is “When I Think of Hello!Project, I Think Of…”

10 – Yuko Nakazawa – She’s about three or four years older than me, and I think she’s very sexy, but also a very practical woman with a temper that reminds me of me.  Neither one of us are as irritable as we used to be, but like me, I think Yuko still has her moments.  I, of course, want to marry her sometimes, but I think that’s due mostly to our similar age and also pity because she’s always worried about not finding a husband.  I want a wife someday, and so I sometimes daydream about Yuko “settling” for me if she doesn’t find anyone she really likes.  I should be so lucky…

9 – Chisato Okai – The lovable scamp!  I don’t even like Charles Dickens, but she reminds me of one of those Dickensian orphan boys who have had a hard life but aren’t adverse to a bit of mischief.  Plus, she has a very underrated voice.

8 – Asami Konno – I love a good underdog, and if you looked up underdog in the Japanese dictionary, you’d find a picture of Konkon next to it.  Assuming dictionaries have pictures, that is.  I’ve never seen one that did, to be honest.  Anyway, not liking Konno is like not liking children or puppies or rainbows.  If you don’t, you just don’t have a heart.  I could go on and on about how sweet and intelligent she is, but I’d serve her much better by telling you to go watch the “All 13 Together!” Morning Musume Christmas Special.  After watching that, if you don’t like Konno, you not only don’t have a heart, you don’t have a soul, either.

7 – Koharu Kusumi – Koharu, like coffee, is an acquired taste.  You either like them, or you don’t.  Fortunately, I’m rather fond of both of them. I love her Kirarin singing voice, and I like her sugary-sweet dorky personality.  I wouldn’t dream of trying to defend her to her “haters” as I, unlike Koharu, just don’t have the energy or persistence for it.  But she’s cool and don’t let anyone tell you she isn’t, and that’s all I’ll say about her for now.

6 – Junjun – If Angels do walk the Earth, then one of them must be Junjun.  She has a pure kind heart and she really seems to cherish her life on this world like the gift it really is.  Generous, but not in a goody-goody way, she really believes in that kind of sharing (those who have seen the “fake lottery” episode of Haromoni@ will know precisely what I mean here.)  Having said that, she has a great sense of humor, and seems to have a good time doing just about anything.

5 – Eri Kamei – When I was growing up, one of the first comic books I ever bought was Elfquest.  I was intrigued by the fierce, yet otherworldly nature of the Elves in that book, as well as their strange ethereal beauty.  To most people, Eri may be an alien (or Erien, whatever).  To me, though, she will always be a magical elf, full of mischief and surprise, and yes, beauty.  Plus, she looks cute in glasses.

4 – Reina – Reina is a sassy, no-nonsense kind of girl who will someday rule the world.  Or should do so, if there’s any justice.  I think I’m rather more fond of her than I used to be, especially since I found out she likes to watch tv a lot, and it’d be cool to come home and spend the night on the couch next to her, vegging out in front of the television with a bag of chips and watching our favorite shows together.

3. Mari – I wish she were my girlfriend.  She likes comics, anime, and having fun.  Her loud personality might be a bit of a challenge, but she’s sweet and beautiful and just seems like she’d be the most awesome person in the world to hang out with.

2. Risa – Sexy!Awesome is the only way to describe her.  Level-headed but with a sense of fun about her, she is truly one of a kind.

1. Ai – Perfection incarnate.  Sexy, sweet, hard-working, self-depreciating, lovable, huggable, oh-so-snuggle-able Ai-chan.  If Junjun is an Angel, then Ai is the Goddess she works for.  There is nothing about this girl that I don’t like.  Her voice is, quite honestly, the best voice I’ve ever heard sing, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I know of her and her beauty and talent.  Also, if I’m allowed a younger wife instead of Yuko, Ai-chan is, without a doubt, the girl I’d be on bended knee in a heartbeat for.

Well, there you have it, my H!P Top Ten.  Tune in next time when I will be listing a slightly naughtier Top Ten, courtesy of Shirow at Wotaku Now

Birthday Eve

Posted in Ai Takahashi, Country Musume, Eri Kamei, Hello!Project, Kumi Koda, Loot, Melon Kinenbi, Misc, Natsumi Abe, V-u-den, Yuko Nakazawa on February 14, 2009 by Pex

Well, tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, as well as being my birthday.  Ever since I first saw the PV for it, I have a little pre-birthday ritual that I like to do.  Namely, to watch Kumi Koda’s Birthday Eve PV on the night before my birthday.  So here it is, for your enjoyment, and you can watch along with me if you like!

My family also threw me a surprise party and gave me the following presents:

  • Yuko Nakazawa Mega Best CD
  • Natsumi Abe Mega Best CD
  • Country Musume Mega Best CD
  • Melon Kinenbi Mega Best CD
  • Taiyo to Cisco Moon Mega Best CD
  • V-u-den Single Best 9 Vol. 1 Omaketsuki CD
  • Silverhawks Volume 1 DVD
  • Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Box Set Volume 2
  • Secret Diary of a Call Girl Season 1 DVD (from my aunt)

My best friend, Trey Krimsin, gave me the following:

  • Green Lantern/Green Arrow Volume 1 TPB
  • Green Lantern/Green Arrow Volume 2 TPB
  • Y-The Last Man Volume 3 TPB

Also, I received four photobooks this year for my birthday.

  • Eri Kamei – Maple
  • Ai Takahashi – 19
  • Mari Yaguchi – Love Hello! Yaguchi Mari Shashinshu
  • Mari Yaguchi – Off

The Eri and Ai photobooks were from my brother, and the two Mari photobooks were from Charmy Risuzu of Renai Project.

Although it’s not technically my birthday yet, I already feel as if I’ve had a pretty good one.  Here’s hoping my next 32 years are as good as the last 32!

Obligatory H!P Best of 2008 – Pex’s oPinion

Posted in Ai Takahashi, Aya Matsuura, Berryz Koubou, C-ute, Hello!Project, Koharu Kusumi, Morning Musume, Risa Niigaki, Yuko Nakazawa on January 9, 2009 by Pex

Okay, so I saw this on Morningtime, and he saw it on Hello!Blog, who saw it on Merry Go Round, it’s basically an opinion poll on the Best of 2008 from the world of H!P.

What does the Pexmeister think about last year? Well…

Best Group Single – Cinderella Complex (High-King)

I did have this entry written already (with Resonant Blue getting the win), but then I remembered Cinderella Complex. I’m honestly shocked that I decided to change my decision, but as good as RB and its previous contenders (Pepper Keibu, Edo no Temari Uta II, and Dschinghis Khan) are, they can’t compare to this slice of aural excellence.

Best Soloist Single – Papancake (Koharu Kusumi) & Kizuna (Aya Matsuura) TIE

I used to want to smack people who gave “TIE” awards. I used to feel it was cheating. I still do, I guess, but I honestly can’t choose between the two. They both perfectly capture the twin sides of H!P for me. Papancake is sheer cracktastic Koharu at her best representing the sugary-kiddie-pop side of H!P which, let’s face it, has been around at least since the time of Minimoni. You can’t honestly tell me that you like the “Ai-n” songs but find Papancake silly. Well, you can tell me that, but I’ll laugh at you, because you’re being silly. On the other end of the spectrum, Kizuna represents the soulful introspective ballads the H!P soloists are usually best known for. In short, they are both the best there is at what they do, and I cannot choose between them. Nor do I wish to.

Best Group Album – Cover You (Morning Musume)

Although I got both 5(Five) and 3rd Love Escalation for Christmas, I have yet to listen to them. Even if I had, there’s just no way that those two albums would beat Cover You. Yes, none of the songs on the album are actually “Morning Musume Songs” as such, but that doesn’t matter. The girls take those songs and make them their ow…no, actually, I can’t really make that judgement. The only one I’d heard prior to the album’s release was Pepper Keibu, and even that one was “tainted” by MM from the very first time I heard it, because my first time hearing the song is via a clip from the docu-drama about the songwriter, and Ai-chan and Risa were singing it. So in my mind, all these songs are Morning Musume songs. With that in mind, Cover You stands out as their most…cohesive album to date. It’s currently tied with Sexy 8 Beat as my favorite MM album of all time.

Best Soloist Album – Legend (Yuko Nakazawa)

No, I don’t have it yet (I plan on getting it for my birthday), but I’ve seen some of the PVs, and though Nacchi has some good songs (and I plan on getting hers for my birthday as well), I’m looking forward to this one more. The Elder Stateswoman of H!P deserves no less than the Best, and so, I give her the award for Best Soloist Album.

Best PV – Resonant Blue (The Version that combines all the other versions into a proper PV)

I remember when music videos (as the non-JPop crowd – as well as myself – like to call PVs) used to tell a story. They would have different scenes, cutting back and forth and weaving a story, setting a mood, and entertaining us. I miss videos like that. Ai-chan on her exercise bike, Risa in the cab, Reina walking through the streets at night…these scenes all say “Resonant Blue” to me. I would choose the version containing only those elements, but there’s something inviting about watching the girls warm up and practicing their dance routines. It’s one of the most normal things I’ve ever seen them do, and I quite like that scene because of it. As a result, I could not separate the versions. I feel I must give an honorary mention to Edo no Temari Uta II because of Chisato’s outfit as well as the outstanding minimalist background silhouettes set design. It totally rocks. Just not enough to win.

Group With Best Overall Releases – Morning Musume

Yes, C-ute and Berryz both released more, but I don’t feel MM should be penalized because of the quantity of releases. They all did very well, but MM’s two singles are two of my favorites by them ever, so in the end, they just had to win.

Best New Group Debuted in 2008 – High-King

It’s funny that, even though I like all three members of Buono, I’ve only listened to maybe one or two of their songs. I don’t know why I can’t get into them. Laziness, I imagine. Either way, High-King refused to let me be lazy. You pretty much had to notice these girls, even if they only released one single and are unlikely to ever release any more. It was just that unforgettable.

Best New Soloist Debuted in 2008 – Erina Mano

Erm…isn’t she the only soloist to debut this year? I can’t remember. Anyway, I haven’t heard anything of hers yet, but since she supposedly plays her own piano music, I’ll give her props for that. I can’t even play Guitar Hero and talk at the same time.

Best Established Group Did Not Debut in 2008 – Morning Musume

C’mon, did you really think I was going to pick anyone else? They’re the flagship, and rightly so. They may not have had as many releases as the other groups (well, more than Melon Kinenbi, but you know what I mean), but the two they had were among the best the group has ever released, so I have to give them props. I will say that Berryz and C-ute both had very strong releases throughout the year.

Best Established Soloist Did Not Debut in 2008 – Koharu Kusumi

I like Koharu’s Kirarin singing voice. I said it, and I’m not ashamed. Her songs have always been fun, ever since Balalaika, and this year’s single, Papancake was no exception. I like her voice so much that I even consider the Milky Way songs and Pinponpan Taisou to be Kusumi solo songs, since she tends to feature so heavily on them. Normally I would feel silly saying that she “roxxors my soxxors”, but she does. Stop all the Koha-hating. It just makes you all seem like old fuddy-duddys.

Best Photobook – Happy Girl (Risa Niigaki)

Let me put it to you this way, Happy Girl and Maple (Eri Kamei) were the two photobooks whose scans wanted to make me start collecting photobooks, and although it was a surprise Christmas gift from my brother, Happy Girl would have been the first one I would have bought myself. Risa just looks absolutely frelling gorgeous, and has the most interesting variety of outfits, but I have to say that the outfit with the old baseball cap and old blue jeans and jacket is my favorite. That’s similar to how my dad (who is a farmer) tends to dress, and whenever I look at that picture, I can smell my dad coming home late at night with the fresh scent of night air on his coat, and it is just so familiar and inviting. I’d like to imagine Risa coming home to me smelling like that and wearing that outfit. It’d be like she had become a part of my family. A picture like that is worth way more than a thousand words, and that’s why this photobook, no matter what, will always be my favorite.

Hottest Idol 0f 2008 – Ai Takahashi

If you haven’t seen Ai-chan’s Pimp Hat and face-caressing skills, go watch High-King’s Cinderella Complex PV right now. She’s sweet, but the girl knows how to make you quiver in all the right ways. The way she puts her hand to her cheek with most of her fingers curled shyly away in that PV, the way her booty goes into turbo-boost overdrive in the Resonant Blue PV, those intense eyes that just reach into yours and say, “C’mere, Sexy!”, those long, luscious legs of hers…to quote Jayne from Firefly/Serenity, I’ll be in my bunk.

Worst Soloist Single/ PV/ Group Single / Vocalist – N/A

Sorry, Pexie don’t play that. I focus on positives in my blog. The most I could give you for any of these would be “Least Best”, and since I haven’t heard everything, I might accidentally give a “Bad” Award to something I will later consider to be good, and I just ain’t gonna do that, sorry.

Least Attractive Girl of 2008 – N/A

Weren’t you listening? Pexie don’t play that. They’re all good in my eyes.

* * *

Okay, I’d actually like to add a category, if I may, and since it’s my blog, I’m gonna do it anyway.

Most Improved Girl of 2008 – Risa Niigaki

I’ve always liked Risa, but her voice never really stood out before, in my mind. All that changed at the MM All Singles concert. She has really upped her game! Listen to her belting out the lyrics in Shabondama or The Manpower, and then go listen to her (almost) solo song from Cover You, Johnny e no Dengon. She really has a lot more range than I ever previously thought. I still think she’d have problems with Koi no Hana (like she did the previous time she sang it on Hello Pro Hour), but overall, she has improved muchly over the course of this past year. At least, I like to think she has. If she was always that good, I’m ashamed of myself for not noticing it any sooner.

* * *

Well, that’s it. That’s yer lot. Take it for what it’s worth, one man’s opinion. Your mileage may vary, etc., etc.

Guess-timation

Posted in Ai Takahashi, Hello!Project, Loot, Morning Musume on January 1, 2009 by Pex

Over the holiday season, I participated in Hello!Online forum member Himalia’s Annual Christmas Giveaway Games, which allows forum members to win actual H!P merchandise donated by Himalia himself. To my complete and utter surprise, I not only won one of the pre-festivities Guessing Games, but I also came in #13th place overall, thus winning yet another prize in addition to what I won in the Guessing Game. While I don’t know yet what my #13th place Prize is going to be yet, I would like to share with you what I won in the Guessing Game. I won nine Ai-chan photocards! Here they are:

006 007 008

Gorgeous, ain’t they! At any rate, someone finally overtook Eri in the category of “Most Photocards of a Single H!P Member Owned by Pex”. I like Eri a lot, but I do like Ai-chan just a bit more, so I don’t really see anything wrong with that. But now I do need to get a Risa photo or two…Risa’s just under Ai-chan on my favorites list, and it’s a shame I don’t have one of her yet. Oh well, I’ll get around to it eventually!

Please look forward to another future post where I’ll reveal what my #13 Prize was!
