One of my first excursions into the world of music was via the TV show, Kids Incorporated. For those of you not familiar with it, it was a show about a group of kids who formed a band (the title of the band being the show’s title) who sang covers of popular songs at their neighborhood malt shop, usually with some sort of storyline going on in the background designed to teach kids about growing up, life, and stuff. The band, now that I think about it, reminds me a lot of Morning Musume. They had a rotating lineup that would change whenever someone “moved away” (in reality, when they grew up and were technically no longer “kids”).
One of the longest-serving cast members was Stacy Ferguson, known to the world today as Fergie of the Black-Eyed Peas. She was my favorite member of the band, and also one of my very first celebrity crushes. I wrote to her a few times, and she even wrote back to me a couple of times. Needless to say, I was in heaven.
As time went on, the show was canceled and I lost track of her. She resurfaced on my radar briefly as a member of Wild Orchid (along with fellow Kids Inc. member, Renee Sandstrom, who played her sister on the show). I lost her again, until I saw the video for My Humps. Like the J. Geils Band, I felt that my memory had just been sold, but also like the guy in the song, I quickly got over it when I heard my “Angel” singing again. Her voice was very different from what I remembered, but also very very enjoyable. As a red-blooded hetero male, I won’t lie to you, the video was kinda nice, too. So I became somewhat of a “Fergie” fan, not really into her, but I do like some of her songs.
What does all this have to do with J-Pop? Kumi Koda has nice humps as well, and recently the unthinkable has happened: one of my favorite J-Pop stars has collaborated on a song with my Stacy! Un-frigging-believable! Two of my favorite “flavors” together, it’s like that ice cream flavor that’s both chocolate and vanilla, the name of which escapes me at the moment.
Is the song good? Ehh, it’s okay. It’s not spectacular, and it’s nowhere as near as good as it could be. It’s not even all that catchy. I still love it though, simply for combining my former childhood crushes with one of my current J-Pop crushes. No matter how good or bad the song is, I give it props for that alone.
And once again, the video was kinda nice…
